When it comes to experiencing a city, museums, galleries, and events are the most fitting ways to immerse oneself in its culture, history, and art scene. Abu Dhabi is not only the capital city of the United Arab Emirates but also a vibrant hub with a lively art scene. From traditional Emirati art to contemporary works by various artists, Abu Dhabi boasts a plethora of museums & galleries.

Here’s a list of some of the best museums and galleries to help guide you through everything the city offers

Museums

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a traditional museum, but it is a must-visit for anybody who admires Islamic art and architecture. With a capacity of up to 41,000 attendees, the mosque is one of the largest in the world. It was finished in 2007 and contains breathtaking Islamic art and architecture. The interior of the mosque is lavishly ornamented with beautiful mosaic patterns and marble columns. The mosque also boasts one of the world’s largest chandeliers, weighing more than 12 tonnes and made of Swarovski crystals.

Qasr Al Hosn Centre

Viewed as the city’s symbolic birthplace, Qasr Al Hosn was the capital’s first permanent structure and home to the UAE’s ruling Al Nahyan family for centuries. After nearly a decade of restoration, the structure reopened to the public as a museum in 2018. The Inner Fort, or Hosn, was constructed around 1795 as a watchtower for the people who landed on Abu Dhabi island in the 1760s. Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan built the Outer Palace in 1939 to function as his majlis (council) and the Al Nahyan family home during winters. Archival material, interactive audio-visual experiences, and archaeological artifacts document the city’s evolution from a fishing and pearl-diving economy to the current glass-and-steel metropolis at the new museum. The House of Artisans holds workshops and demonstrations by Emirati artisans, such as the UAE’s first Bait Al Gahwa, an initiative that allows visitors to taste UNESCO-protected Arabian coffee served traditionally.
